Sample book, quality 'Dover' from Hjula Væveri
Description (English)
This spread from the sample book from Hjula from 1897 shows 48 small samples of the cotton quality “Dover”. The fabrics were probably used to make dresses and skirts. The density and weaving of the samples are similar, while the colours and cheques differ. Some of the patterns are tartans, or variations of tartans, that were fashionable during a major part of the 19th Century. The tartan fashion spread from Queen Victoria and the British court to all over Europe. There are also samples of more discrete checks in blue and grey.
