Simple microscope

De microscopen van Van Leeuwenhoek zijn een mooi voorbeeld van echte research instrumenten. Wars van alle opsmuk die andere typen wel hebben uit die tijd was dit een simpel model. De vergroting en de wijze waarop de lens geslepen werd bleef lang een mysterie. Recent onderzoek heeft een verklaring gevonden. De techniek die hij gebruikte is te vergelijken met hoe diamantslijpers diamanten slijpen. Van de +/- 400 exemplaren die hij maakte zijn er nog maar 10 over. Vier daarvan zijn in Museum Boerhaave voor het publiek te zien.

Van Leeuwenhoek’s microscopes are good examples of true research instruments. Free of the adornments common to other models, this one is quite plain. The magification and the way the lenses were ground remained a mystery for many years. Recent research has found an explanation. The technique he used is comparable to the way diamond polishers do their work. Of the +/- 400 microscopes Van Leeuwenhoek made, only about 10 remain. Four of them can be found in the Museum Boerhaave.
